Morgan Falls On The Chattahoochee River

The Morgan Falls area on the Chattahoochee River provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy nature in the midst of a large urban area. The recreational activities available here offer a respite from Atlantas noise and traffic. The City of Sandy Springs, the federal government, and Georgia Power all offer outdoor recreational facilities in the Morgan Falls area, just north of Atlantas perimeter.

Morgan Falls Dam was constructed on the Chattahoochee River from 1901-03. The small dam and hydroelectric plant provided the power to run Atlantas streetcars. The scenic reservoir which formed behind the dam was named Bull Sluice Lake. Its calm backwaters and sloughs immediately provided an excellent fishing area. Today the dam and power plant are owned by Georgia Power, which has recently constructed a new fishing pier below the dam. It offers a great place to fish for trout, which are stocked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Anglers may also catch bass, bream, and channel catfish. The dam is accessed off Morgan Falls Road.

The City of Sandy Springs has developed a new park in the area. Overlook Park at Morgan Falls is located at 200 Morgan Falls Road, along the shores of Bull Sluice Lake. A recently completed .75 mile walking trail leads visitors through hardwood and pine forest and offers scenic views of the lake and river. There are trailheads next to the parking area and behind the events pavilion. While clearing the land for the park, the city discovered an old home site on the bluff overlooking the lake. An archaeological survey of the area revealed that the home site dated to 1839 and belonged to William Power, an early settler in the area. A road trace leads down to the river where the Power family once operated a ferry crossing, the Upper Powers Ferry. Today the home site is marked by two stacked stone chimneys, one standing in good condition and the other substantially collapsed. Overlook Park also contains a playground, picnic area, and a dock for canoes and kayaks. No swimming is allowed in the lake.

The Gold Branch Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is located on Lower Roswell Road at Morgan Falls. This park contains a picnic area and several miles of hiking trails bordering the Chattahoochee River and Bull Sluice Lake. There is a $3 daily use fee at the park.
The Morgan Falls area is located in the north end of the City of Sandy Springs, a northern suburb of Atlanta. These parks along the river and Bull Sluice Lake allow users to enjoy a bit of nature without leaving metro Atlanta.

Fishing In The Newberry, South Carolina Area

Newberry is an historic town in the midlands of South Carolina, located just 35 miles northwest of Columbia. The areas mild climate affords residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a number of outdoor sports and activities year round. Fishing is particularly popular in the region, and the Newberry area offers several popular lakes and rivers for anglers to try.

Lake Murray, located just a few minutes south of Newberry, is a major recreation destination. The beautiful 50,000 acre lake offers some of the best largemouth and striped bass fishing in the South. In addition to bass, fishermen may also reel in catfish, crappy, yellow perch, rockfish, and bream. A number of local and national fishing tournaments are held at Lake Murray each year. Dreher Island State Recreation Area is popular with fishermen and has a marina, boat slips, boat ramps, and bait and tackle shop. Other public access points near Newberry are located at Sunset Ridge Recreation Area and Kempsons Bridge on Highway 395.

Lake Greenwood is located just a few minutes west of Newberry. Created by the construction of Buzzards Roost Dam on the Saluda River, Lake Greenwood is one of South Carolinas most scenic lakes. The lake contains over 200 miles of shoreline and offers great bass fishing. Lake Greenwood State Recreation Area provides one of the most popular access points on the lake. The park has three boat ramps for private boat access and a handicapped fishing pier.

Parr Shoals Reservoir is a 4,400 acre largely undeveloped lake a few miles east of Newberry. The lake was created by a dam on the Broad River. Two good points of access on the lake are located where Hellers Creek and Cannons Creek cross Broad River Road. Each of these areas has a boat ramp and a picnic area.

The Enoree River flows through the northern part of Newberry County. The Sumter National Forest maintains two boat ramps on the river. One is located on Brazelmans Bridge Road and the other is on Maybinton Road at Keitts Bridge. There are restroom facilities at each location.

The Saluda River on the south border of Newberry County is also popular with fishermen. There is a public boat ramp at Higgins Bridge, just off Highway 121 south of the town of Silverstreet. Access is also available at the Saluda River Resort in Silverstreet. The resort has a general store that stocks bait and tackle.

Visitors to the Newberry area may enjoy fishing at one of these popular spots. Newberrys mild weather allows for fishing and other outdoor activities most of the year.

Biking is a great way for visitors to see the city of Atlanta and enjoy its area parks and greenways. The weather is mild much of the year, and biking provides an opportunity for outdoor recreation and exercise. Visitors who are in town without their bikes will find several shops around the metro area that rent bikes, and one company that specializes in bicycle tours.

Bicycle Tours of Atlanta offers a guided Heart of the City Tour that covers approximately ten miles in three hours. Riders will see many of Atlantas historic sites and intown neighborhoods. The tour is recommended for riders age 16 and older who lead an active lifestyle. Safety is a priority and tours are led by experienced urban cyclists. The route leads along Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, past Underground Atlanta, and through the Martin Luther King Historic District, where the Civil Rights movement was centered. Riders will pass Grant Park, home of Zoo Atlanta and the Cyclorama, and historic Oakland Cemetery. The tour continues through Inman Park, Atlantas first planned suburb, and into Little Five Points, one of Atlantas most offbeat neighborhoods. The tours leave from Studiplex Lofts, Suite 19G, located east of downtown at 659 Auburn Avenue. Parking is free. Tours leave at 9am. The cost is $49 and includes bikes, helmets, and water.

The Silver Comet Trail, which begins in the northwest metro area, is a popular place to ride bikes. The paved multi-use National Recreation Trail runs over an abandoned rail line. It begins in the town of Smyrna and goes 61 miles west to the Georgia-Alabama border. It connects to the Chief Ladiga Trail, which goes another 35 miles to Anniston, Alabama.

Two bicycle shops located along the Silver Comet Trail offer bike rentals. Silver Comet Depot Cycles has a good selection of rentals that are available hourly on weekends and holidays and full or half days at other times. There is a required $50 deposit and helmets are included. The shop is located at 4342 Floyd Road in Mableton, Georgia, and is open year round. Smyrna Bicycles is also located just off the Silver Comet Trail at 4624 Camp Highland Road SE in Smyrna. This is a full service shop that also rents bikes hourly and daily.

Roswell Bicycles at 670 Houze Way in Roswell, Georgia, has bikes for rent. They are located a short drive from the Big Creek Greenway, a paved multi-use trail in the northern suburb of Alpharetta. Roswell Bicycles is open daily and rents hybrids and road bikes.
Skate Escape, located at 1086 Piedmont Avenue in midtown, rents bikes as well as skates. Their location is very convenient for those who want to ride bikes in Atlantas Piedmont Park. Skate Escape rents childrens bikes, 3 speeds, tandems, and recumbent bikes. They offer hourly and daily rentals.

Atlantas parks, greenways, and the Silver Comet Trail are popular places for bike riding. Visitors who enjoy the sport should try one of these bike rental shops and join local residents for some fun and exercise.
